This is a snapshot, not a grade. A rising number over time matters more than any single month.

Home value is whatever you estimate today, so this number leans on the housing market. Check it on roughly the same date each time. For scale: the Federal Reserve's 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances put median household debt at 29.2% of assets among families that carried debt at all (Federal Reserve Board).

What net worth actually tells you

Net worth is what you own minus what you owe: cash, investments, and the equity in your home on one side, mortgage, loans, and card balances on the other. It beats any single account balance because nothing in your finances changes dramatically overnight. A promotion or a bad quarter barely moves it. When it does move, several things moved together.

It is also a number with a huge range, which is why comparing yourself to someone else's is close to useless. Median family net worth in the Federal Reserve's 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances was $192,900. The median for the bottom quarter of families was$3,500, and homeowners sat at $396,200 against $10,400 for renters (Aladangady et al., Federal Reserve Board, 2023). A gap that wide means the median is mostly telling you about house prices and which decade you were born in.

Age is the other half of the story. Median net worth in that same survey ran $39,000 for families under 35, $135,600 at 35–44, and $247,200 at 45–54. Nobody builds that in a straight line. The mortgage years and the early career years both push the number around. The level means less than the slope.

So run this calculator twice a year, on the same weekend, with the same method: same home estimate, same accounts, same exclusions. Two numbers six months apart will tell you something real. One number on a Tuesday in a volatile quarter probably won't.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an asset?

Cash, checking and savings accounts, investment accounts (brokerage, 401(k), IRA), home equity, and other things you own that have value. Most people leave out their car and furniture — leave them out here too, and your number stays consistent over time.

What counts as a liability?

Mortgages, student loans, car loans, credit-card balances, and any other money you owe. If you rent, this line stays at zero and that is completely normal.

Is a higher net worth always better?

Direction matters more than the size. A rising number usually means the habits are working, and the Fed’s 2022 data show families build it in steps: median net worth runs $39,000 under 35 and $247,200 at 45–54. A modest number at 30 is a starting position, not a verdict.

Do you store my numbers?

No. Everything runs in this browser. Your entries stay on your own device in local storage so the page is still there when you come back, the Reset button wipes them, and we never see or save what you type.
